District Clerk Loren Jackson

Loren Jackson attended the United States Military Academy at West Point and graduated with a degree in English from Texas A&M University. He received his J.D. from South Texas College of Law here in Houston in 2003. He is an Attorney with a mid-sized law-firm in its downtown Houston office. His practice focuses on General Civil Litigation, predominantly in Environmental Law. He has also represented clients in numerous other litigation-related matters. As a Litigation Attorney, he has virtually daily dealings with the Harris County District Clerk’s office.

In addition to his law firm employment, he worked abroad in 2002 at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia in the Netherlands, where former high-ranking Serbian officials were indicted and tried for atrocities committed during the Balkans War in the early 1990’s. During Law school, he also interned at the Harris County District Attorney’s office, working with both felony and misdemeanor prosecutors. During his collegiate years, Loren also operated a business, simultaneously staffing, administering and managing several community recreation clubs. As a former business operator concerned with budgeting issues and as an Attorney who has experience in both the criminal and civil side, he has the experience necessary to bring the Harris County District Clerk’s office into a leadership role in our State.

His wife, Laura, is a lifelong Houston resident and attended St. Pius Catholic High School. She is currently a Speech Pathologist with TIRR/Memorial Hermann where she aids people in their struggle to overcome disabilities related to traumatic brain injuries. She also spent many years working for State Senator John Whitmire. Loren and his wife are active members of Houston’s First Baptist Church.

Loren is also actively involved in several professional, civic, and charitable activities. As a member of the Minority Opportunities in the Legal Profession committee with the Houston Bar Association, Loren works other members to ensure equal opportunities for all minorities within the legal community. As a member of the Habitat for Humanity Community, Loren is committed to finding and building affordable housing for those in need. During Law School, Loren was a mentor/mediator with the Peer to Peer Mediation Project at High Point East, in which he was able to successfully mediate disputes and mentor adolescents who were returning from juvenile detention centers and reincorporating into their families and the classroom. Additionally, he volunteers for the Houston Bar Association’s "Legal Lines" program, where he provides free legal counseling for those unable to afford or otherwise obtain legal advice.

Further, Loren has been recognized and honored for his work in the community. He has participated in a number of community clean-up activities, and organized a clean-up in Sunnyside in partnership with Keep Houston Beautiful in 2007. Additionally, he sponsored/co-sponsored various community events for organizations such as The American Red Cross, A. Phillip Randolph Institute, Constable May Walker’s “May Fest” Health Expo, and clothing drives for the Star of Hope, among others.

Loren has lived and traveled abroad for most of his life and understands the strength that diversity can bring. He also understands the value of money to the taxpayers of Harris County, and understands the daily struggles that many of us face financially. Loren can truly relate to the general public, and certainly brings to the position a focus on maximizing value in services.

His desire is for every resident of Harris County to know the role and responsibilities of the District Clerk’s Office. Accountability should be demanded of all elected officials, and it is exceedingly difficult to know whether an elected is doing their job, if the people are not knowledgeable as to what the job entails. He is committed to seeking ways in which to limit aggregate costs to taxpayers, while at the same time increasing services, promoting educational and training opportunities for staff, implementing a top to bottom organizational review to increase efficiency, and to working with the Commissioner’s Court, District Judges, and the citizens of Harris County, in making Harris County the standard bearer in Texas.
