Civil/Family Filing Information

Civil Filing with Fees
Civil pleadings, such as petitions, cross-actions, counterclaim's, etc. may be filed in the Civil Intake Section, 1st floor civil courthouse, 201 Caroline. These type pleadings have fees to be receipted for at time of filing. Office hours are from 8:00 a.m. To 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Due to the parking situation during home games for the Astros on a business day, the Family Intake Section will close at 5 p.m. on such days.

Civil Case Filing Fees

These are the most commonly requested fees associated with civil case filings:

Civil Filings without Fees

Civil pleadings, such as answers, amended petitions, etc. may be filed in the Civil Intake "No Fees" section, first floor Civil Courthouse, 201 Caroline. These type pleadings have "no fees" associated with their filing. Office hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Filing Civil/Family Case Information after Hours

A 24-hour drop box is located in the Civil Courthouse at 201 Caroline, where pleadings can be file stamped and deposited for processing the next business day.

Fax Filing

The District Clerk's Office is pleased to provide fax filing and offers you the following information so that you may take advantage of this service:

  • The Civil Intake fax number for fax-filing civil court cases is (713) 755-5480.
  • The Family Intake fax number for fax-filing family court cases is (713) 755-5754.

Pursuant to Texas Government Codes 51.803 and 51.807, the District Clerk’s Office is authorized to accept any document by fax that might be filed in a court action, except: returns of service on issuances, bonds, and signed orders or judgment. Fax filing fees include the filing fee plus $1.00 per page service fee. Upon your request, the District Clerk’s Office will make copies of documents at a cost of twenty-five cents per page. This will be helpful when a copy of a document is required for citation.

Payment for fax filings may only be made with a credit card; a 4% credit card convenience fee will be asset for each transaction. Family Filings with Fees

Family pleadings, such as petitions, cross-actions, interventions, etc., may be filed in the Family Intake Section in the basement of the Family Law Center, Room 23, at 1115 Congress or mailed to the Harris County District Clerk at P.O. Box 4651, Houston, Texas, 77210-4651. These types of pleadings require fees and must be remitted at the time of filing. The Harris County District Clerk does not provide or carry any legal forms to file a civil or family matter. All documents must be prepared before filing. Office hours for Family Intake are 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Due to the parking situation during home games for the Astros on a business day, the Family Intake Section will close at 5 p.m. on such days.

Family Filings without Fees

Family pleadings, such as answers, amended petitions, waivers, etc., may be filed in the Family Intake Section basement of the Family Law Center, Room 23, at 1115 Congress or mailed to the Harris County District Clerk at P.O. Box 4651, Houston, Texas, 77210-4651. There are no fees associated with the filing of these types of pleadings. Office hours for Family Intake are 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Due to the parking situation during home games for the Astros on a business day, the Family Intake Section will close at 5 p.m. on such days.
