Criminal Intake and Criminal Courts

In Harris County, the District Clerk serves the twenty-two (22) felony Criminal District Courts, and the fifteen (15) misdemeanor Harris County Criminal Courts at Law. From the very beginning in the life of a criminal case file, our Criminal Intake clerks receive charging instruments from the District Attorney’s Office, generate a criminal case in the Countywide Justice Information Management System (JIMS) database and assemble the physical case file folder including the initial charging document within. This case file is routed to the respective criminal court, and the file, including incoming filings and case documents, is maintained by our Criminal Court Clerks until it is scheduled for review. The Court Clerk makes and maintains an accurate, permanent record of all proceedings, and issues all processes emanating from the court.

The Detention Courts act as a liaison between the District Clerk, the Courts, the District Attorney, Pre-Trial Services and law enforcement agencies.

Support Activities

Apart from courtside assistance and service performed by our Court Clerks, criminal support clerks also provide an array of services for the courts and the community. Including Criminal Customer Service and Criminal Exhibits.
